It's been a while since I did a Friday Flashback. Mainly because I ran out of entertaining pictures of me being an idiot. Thankfully, I've done things in the last few years to make my kids look like idiots too! Yay for idiots!
Today's Flashback takes us back 5 years when Babe was just a wee thing and Bud was almost the same size he is now. (Sadly, I'm not exaggerating all that much.)
They may be helpless pawns in my game of life, but they sure are cute!
Happy Friday!!!

Friday Flashback - Wall Building
Today’s flashback is a hindsight, a picture drawn with words if
you will, rather than a real photo…sorry for the downer.
My Papa died in March 2000, my sister died April 5, 2000, I
graduated from high school in May 2000, we moved to a different state in August
2000, 2 weeks after that I started college, a few months after that I broke up
with my high school boyfriend and started “dating” someone else that was
serving in the Air Force (he was an ex-boyfriend that I reconnected with). He
came home from deployment shortly after we reconnected and I promptly fell in
love with him and he promptly dumped me. I was so hurt, so pissed off, so
utterly broken from all the change and stress that defined my life in that
year.
I didn’t realize it at the time but looking back, that is when I
started building walls. My childhood was relatively carefree and happy. I never
dealt with any major issues (beyond which activity to play with my friends that
day) so I didn’t know how to deal with all the stress and pain I found myself
in. I’m a happy-go-lucky type of person, and I bet if you ask anyone who knew
me then, they’d be shocked to hear I was having such a hard time. I smiled and
sucked it up and went about my business. I even fooled myself. It’s only
looking back now that I realize how traumatic that time really was. To make it
through the day I ignored my problems. I didn’t analyze anything or give much
attention to my feelings. And I started building walls. These walls kept me
safe. How can anyone hurt you if you don’t let them close? I learned to keep
them just far enough away that they think
I’m letting them in but really there is a big, strong wall right in the middle.
I was safe behind my walls. The best part, no one knew they were there…and I
ignored the fact that they were. They just became part of me.
This really worked great for me. That is until I met my husband. We
fell in love very quickly (we were engaged after 6 months and got married about
9 months after that). Yet, I still had my walls. I knew I wasn’t giving my
husband the love he needed or deserved. I knew it but I had forgotten about my
walls (they were so deeply ingrained that I didn’t see them as separate from
me) so neither of us could see what the problem was. I don’t want to say I
regret marrying him, because I don’t. He really is a wonderful person and a
great father to our children. But my walls were causing hell. And then he got
stuck in a job that sucked the rest of the life out of him and he changed. He
became miserable and all the little negative parts of his personality became
amplified. I’ll sum it up by saying our marriage sucked.
We almost divorced a couple of times but neither of us really
wanted to. I knew it was mostly his job that was making him miserable but all
that misery just reinforced my walls. I would not let him hurt me. I would not
let him bring me down. He needed love and affection and would push hard for
that, all the while being miserable in every other way. I worked under the
premise that he can go on and be miserable but I am going to keep smiling and I’ll
just do whatever I want to do with little regard to him. That worked splendidly
for about zero seconds. Yet, we continued on like that for that entire time. It
was a vicious cycle of him pushing for what he needed and me running as fast as
I could in the other direction with my walls safely between us.
In October of last year he FINALLY got a new job. The hours weren’t
great and the pay sucked but he was out of that hell hole that was his previous
job! Things started to look up. Especially when he was offered an even better
job a few months later, with better pay and MUCH better hours. Things were
good.
And then they were not good. I will not go into detail here but I’ll
just say that even my walls weren’t protecting me anymore. It was all just too
much. I became miserable. I found myself driving home slowly because I didn’t
want to be there. I stopped smiling. I started being mean because I didn’t care
to make an effort not to be. I fell out of love.
With my walls no longer being effective and my realization that
they really weren’t helping me anyway I decided I couldn’t pretend anymore. I
couldn’t go on as we were, just pretending everything was ok. Everything was
not ok. But now what? How do I cope when every coping mechanism I’ve ever used
has failed me? I didn’t know what to do, what to think, how to act. Then the
anxiety attacks started. I didn’t know what it was at first but after a couple
of times I realized that’s what was happening. At that point I knew we hit
bottom.
During my…breakdown (I guess you would call it that, although that
sounds awfully dramatic) my husband had his own transformation. From what he’s tells
me, he realized how good he has really had it, realized how miserable and
horrible he was to us all and he is now looking at things in a whole new way. He’s
happy. Don’t get me wrong, he is under no illusion that everything is ok, but
he’s going forward with a positive attitude.
That brings me to my next problem. I don’t know how to handle this
new, excited, optimistic person. At first I figured it was his way of trying to
cheer me up and get me out of my funk. I appreciated his efforts but I just
kept waiting for the old husband to come back so it wasn’t having too much
effect on me. Then yesterday he responded to a chain of emails between me and
my cousins (planning our upcoming trip to their house) and his response was
cheery, upbeat, and completely frightening for me. That’s when I realized, not
only do I have to get over the hurt and all of our past issues, but I also have
to figure out who this new guy is. I feel myself trying to build more walls to
guard myself against this unknown man trying to get me to love him. While part
of me is enjoying this new guy, with his upbeat attitude, great suggestions for
fun things to do on the weekends, helping around the house, the other part is
reeling from the absolute change of direction. Who is this man and what has he
done with my husband?? I have the urge to poke him with a stick (think the
large poking device that the “Friends” gang fashioned so that they could see if
Ugly Naked Guy was really dead or not) to see if he’s real or not. I just do
not know how to cope.
The good thing is I’m facing the issues now. Really facing them. I
don’t know where it will lead or how bumpy the road will be but that is where I
am coming from and this is where I am now. Part of me can’t wait to see how it
turns out, the other part…scared to death!

Friday Flashback - With a Twist
Don't let this sweet face down!
Ok, my dear readers. I am getting desperate just got
inspired. I thoroughly enjoy posting my Friday Flashback’s and I think you have
too (don’t burst my bubble, just go with it!). While I would just love to post
more embarrassing pictures of myself I seem to have run out. Seriously, I can’t
find any more worth posting. (I mean come on, there are only so many
traditional Dutch costumes and 80’s spandex one girl can claim.) SO! Where am I
going with this you ask? I’m begging turning to you! I’d love it if you’d
be willing to share any crazy “oh my God, I can’t believe I looked like that”
pictures.
SO! Send me your embarrassing pictures, along with the story that tries
to explains the photo and we’ll all laugh at you I’ll link to your
blog (if you have a blog but it is definitely NOT a requirement – hint, hint
Wench and your sisters) and we’ll have a grand time! GRAND I tell you!!!
I hope you’ll join me in embracing our awkwardness and poor
choices! Come on, all the cool kids are doing it!
Send pictures to momnextdoorblog@gmail.com
and I’ll be your best friend forever!!

One of my favorite pictures of him. He’s only a few weeks old here and still all innocent looking curled up and squishy!
Love it!

Friday Flashback
I had several comments last week about the awesomeness hideousness of my pink wallpaper as a child. I'd like to redeem myself a little this week. I wised up and got rid of the pink. I replaced it with Ranger memorabilia and, what I like to call, teenage crap. Much better!
(This is an "early" picture of my Ranger memorabilia. Let's just say...it grew since this picture. I'll show you someday.)
As for my awesome facial expression. I'm pretty sure I still make that face when I'm trying to do something. So...whatever.
Didn't everyone play baseball with a mini-bat given away at Bat Day at Yankee Stadium? Just me? You don't know what you missed out on!
On a completelyunrelated note, I still can't believe my parents thought my room was messy growing up. As you can plainly see, I was very organized, even matching my towel to my shirt.
Happy Friday!

Friday Flashback
I don't remember how old I was in this picture (maybe 7 or 8) but I was the coolest (obviously) and had an awesome friendship bracelet collection. It was the best! It would stay wet for days and be so itchy underneath but I was COOL! For some reason my mom said I couldn’t wear them anymore and made me cut them off. She said they were starting to smell and my arm was probably atrophying underneath. (I don’t really believe she used the word “atrophy” but it would have been pretty cool if she did say that to her 7 yo daughter.) (Then again, to get me to stop sucking my thumb my parents told me that if I didn’t stop I’d suck all the skin right off my thumb and I’d just have the bone sticking out…so, maybe she did use the word atrophy.) Either way, to calm me down she said we could take a picture so we’d never forget how disgustingly gross wonderful those few months were.
(I know I am you are excited that I found ANOTHER picture with a cameo appearance from that heart comforter!)
(I can spot at least 7 items in this picture that I still own.)
(I may have trouble throwing things away.)
So...you better believe I did NOT discourage my son when he discovered Silly Bandz!
And yes, he's sitting at the same table that I was sitting at.
Happy Friday Peeps!

Friday Flashback - Special Birthday Edition
My dad turns 60 on Monday, and in honor of that, I’d like to take a longer-than-usual walk down memory lane. For those of you that know my dad, it is VERY hard to imagine a time when he wasn’t preying on the small and weak for his own amusement was innocent. BUT! I have found photographic evidence that he could be (almost) angelic! I think it’s important to remember that even the bullies were once babes.
And my MOST favorite...
Do you see his socks? They kill me!
Look! He's smiling! In a picture! This is rare footage people!
For those of you that don’t know my father, perhaps the following pictures will help you better grasp where I am coming from…
I feel bad for my mom, but then again, she chose to marry him so...
Sadly, this is not an uncommon occurance when little kids are around my father
Nor is this...
It does explain a lot about me though
Nor this...
Except age is not a factor for throwing someone in a lake fully clothed
Happy 60th Birthday Dad! For some reason, I actually love you!

Friday Flashback
These was taken at Lake George in 1979 during a camping trip with friends.
Love the shorts Dad! LOVE THEM!
There isn't much more I can say to make this picture any more awesome.
I wouldn't be surprised if he still owned those shorts. He still has his track uniform from high school...and can STILL WEAR IT. Comfortably.
Jerk.
Jerk.
Sometimes I forget how pretty my mom is, because you know, she's my mom. But man, I really I hope I age like her. She looks exactly the same all these years later.
Happy Friday!

Friday Flashback
Last year’s Christmas picture (bird or gang signs, you decide) was such a hit that I thought I’d stick with the theme for one more week.
In this picture Bud is just 3 months old and we were getting ready to go to my cousin’s wedding. I think he was really excited to go! Don’t you? He tried to hide the fact that he was flipping us off but pictures don't lie.

Friday Flashback - Thursday Edition
Bud's First Christmas (Circa 2006)
My Aunt made Bud a stocking out of my sister's clothes for his first Christmas. After I stopped sobbing I realized just how BIG the stocking was! I commented, "It's so big, Bud could probably fit in it." Well! You know that means I had to try! Sure enough! He fit! And then I made my husband hold him up so I could take lots and lots of pictures! :-)
The problem is now I have to find enough stocking stuffers to fill that thing! Thanks Aunt D! Thanks a lot :-)
(And I wouldn't trade it for the world. I choke up just thinking about how much I love this stocking.)
I'll be MIA for a while because I'm hosting Christmas (17 people for 4 days and 28 on Christmas day) so I'll be busying entertaining and trying to survive.
Merry Christmas everyone!
P.S. Remind me to tell you guys about my fridge fiasco. We got a new one...and then we didn't.

Friday Flashback
This is post-Christmas morning, playing with my Christmas haul. That kitchen set was one of the best presents I ever received. (Only surpassed by the box of dress-up clothes given to me by my aunt that same Christmas.)
(Speaking of great presents, I guess I'd have to say that comforter with hearts all over it also qualifies as a "favorite." I feel like it’s in the majority of my flashbacks. It’s like Where’s Waldo: Heart Comforter Edition.)
(For the record, my mom still has that comforter at her house and we use it to line Babe’s fold-up bed when we stay over. (And it’s not an optical illusion, I shared that bedroom with my sister for a while and we both had the same comforter. Her bed is visible in the picture, mine is behind me and you can only see the comforter because my awesome apron is obscuring the rest of the bed.) My mom also has that night light way in the back of the picture and I have that little wooden table and chair set at my house – you can only see the chair in the picture. And I think my current bedroom floor has the same amount of crap on it…except the carpet is definitely NOT pink.)
(I really wish that purple body suit still fit me. I lived in that thing! Good times.)
(Did I use enough parentheses?)
(I don’t think you can ever use enough parentheses!)
(Happy Friday!)

Friday Flashback (on Wednesday)
Since I have very fond memories of Thanksgiving at my Grandparents house I thought I would honor them in this week's Friday Flashback (on Wednesday).
I am so thankful to have wonderful grandparents who love us unconditionally, taught us how important God is, and know that every family get-together is better with food!

This was taken in Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx (sometime in the 40's)
We love you Super Grandma!
If I remember correctly, this picture was taken during WWII in Germany.
RIP Grandpa. We miss you!
I will be ruthlessly elbowing people out of my way shopping on Black Friday so I probably won't get a chance to post again until Monday. I hope everyone has elastic waist pants a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Friday Flashback
Last week’s Friday Flashback was so well received that I thought I would embarrass myself even more this week. As you can see, my friends and I had high modeling aspirations. I don’t know why we never got “discovered.” With a portfolio like mine it just goes to show how hard it is to make it in the business. I probably should have kept the heart bedspread backdrop for this picture. I think my penguin collection was probably too distracting and unprofessional. But it's good to know I stayed consistent with the crutches in the corner.

Friday Flashback
Jump for Joy!! It's FRIDAY!!!!
After a stressful week I really just want to kick back and relax and think about more care-free times, such as when me and my friends would stage photo shoots in my bedroom. Do you see how the talent just radiates from this entire picture? From the artistic backdrop (the duffle bags holding up the comforter really add to the artistic element, no?), to the casual props (doesn't everyone have crutches in the corner of their bedroom?), to the height of fashion in workout clothes gymnast wear early 90's couture what I am wearing. I believe this picture HAS IT ALL! You're welcome.
Happy Friday everyone! It's been a loooong week but my schedule should be getting much better. Thanks for staying with me!

Friday Flashback
After volleyball last night (which was super fun and we KICKED BUTT!) my friend’s daughter was doing some of her cheerleader moves (like toes touches and pikes). Never one to be outdone by a middle schooler, I kicked off my flip flops (and yes I had socks on. Didn’t you know it’s ok for “athletes” to wear socks and flip flops after a game?? It is!) and started showing her up with my toes touches and pikes. (Yes, I can still actually do toe touches and pikes. I even got more height than her. I was a gymnast until I was 10! Gymnasts can do stuff like that!. Then I started taunting her and made her cry. I also pulled her hair and stuck out my tongue.) Now that I’m all in the athleticky (I love making up words) spirit I thought today’s flashback would be a great time to break out these gems. I KNOW you are all jealous of those leg warmers...and the belt!!
Bonus points to anyone who knows why "as a gymnast" I'm wearing the belt.
Please make note of the walkman in my sisters hand. We were both uber-cool!!!
You may also find the setting of these pictures familiar. Our entry way was a perfect "stage" and we used it for all of our productions!

Friday Flashback
Every few months we have a family get-together at my Grandma’s house. (It’s a big deal; there are a lot of us.) My Aunt who lives on the west coast doesn’t get to attend, as a cross-country flight every few months isn’t in the budget. But this time? This time it’s different! We’ve convinced her to make the trip! I can’t even tell you how excited we all are!
I am dedicating today’s flashback to her. How can you not love her??
Lily

I really should just call this weekly feature "80's and early 90's Flashback." I'm just drawn to the high fashion of that era. I can't get enough!
(On another note: my parents still have their beach mat like that. And both of those boys are in college now!)
But nothing compares to the high fashion of the 50's!!
(My aunt has always been a fashionista!)
